The future development of City of Gampaha is defined by the proposed Gampaha City Development Plan - 2023-2033 which is currently being prepared by the Urban Development Authority with the consultation of Gampaha Municipal Council and relevant stakeholders. The proposed Development Plan envisions Gampaha City to be “The Flourishing Green Capital of Siyane”. The plan adopts three goals aligned towards its vision and these three goals focus on creating a dynamic, vibrant city core by revitalizing the city’s economy, enhancing the city’s capital city role with quality enhancement of its administrative services and enabling a comfortable city fabric and facilitating a safe, secure urban nest offering the best quality of life.
The Urban Development Authority together with the Gampaha City Innovation and Investment Forum, took the initiative to experiment the facilitation of the transformation of an existing Sri Lankan city into a Smart City taking City of Gampaha as the case study. Accordingly, the smart city approach was adopted and bridged with the spatial planning process in formulating strategies to achieve the anticipated future goals and city vision.
The Smart Gampaha Planning Framework includes three broader strategic interventions including transport-oriented development, transparent and effective administrative service development and quality living environment development with physical infrastructure development, ICT infrastructure development and social development integrated with six smart city pillars; smart mobility, smart governance, smart living, smart environment, smart people and smart economy.
